Meditate on God’s Word: The Struggle That Sent Me to Scripture

“The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.”
– Psalm 119:130

After giving my life to Christ & being baptized as an adult, I began noticing how often fellow Christians in church & in women’s small groups talked about the phrase “meditate on God’s Word.”
The deeper chasm layer — the true point of tension for me — was how unfamiliar this sounded & felt.
I would tilt my head in confusion.
I realized the way I had learned & practiced meditation probably didn’t match the meaning they were expressing about engaging with, & being in, God’s Word.
Seeking God’s Truth through His Word — the Bible — became a foundational cornerstone of my spiritual formation.
That set me on a path of tracing the practice of “meditate on God’s Word” back to its first appearance in Scripture to understand the original meaning & intent.
That’s when I realized God was about to take me back to the very beginning.
[P.S. I love Genesis — & that’s another story.]
Thus our history lesson begins…
Scriptural Origin of “Meditate”
In the Old Testament, ~1400 BC – 400 BC, the Hebrew word hagah (הָגָה), which translates to “meditating” (Blue Letter Bible — Strong’s Concordance: H1897), appears 25 times & is most often defined as:
meditate,
mourn,
or speak.
“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day & night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous & successful.” - Joshua 1:8
“But whose delight is in the law of the Lord, & who meditates on his law day & night.” - Psalm 1:2
By the time of the New Testament (~ 50–100 AD), Greek was a widely spoken language so the New Testament was written in Greek rather than Hebrew.
In the New Testament, the Greek word corresponding to “meditate” appears once as meletaō (Blue Letter Bible — Strong’s Concordance: G3191) & carries a similar sense of intentional, disciplined focus & practice.
“Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress.” - 1 Timothy 4:15
More often, writers expressed the idea of “meditate” using words like:
Abide (menō) — remain, stay connected, continue dwelling in Christ
Dwell (enoikeō) — let Christ’s word live inside you
Set your mind (phroneō) — direct your thinking toward things of God
Think on (logizomai) — actively consider & reckon something as true
Fix your eyes / consider (katanoeō, aphoraō) — sustained, intentional attention
Historically, & textually, this reflects a clear movement:
Old Testament → a specific word describing sound-based pondering of God’s Word
New Testament → relational & continual mindset language describing living in God’s truth, in Christ, & in the work of the Spirit
As Scripture moved from Hebrew to Greek, & later into other languages (such as Latin), the interpretation of “meditate on God’s Word” spread across civilizations & cultures, while still calling for care to remain anchored to its original God-centered intent as language & cultural expression continued to develop.
Seeing this through Scripture & history reshaped how I now understand what it means to “meditate on God’s Word” for my life.
“Meditate on God’s Word” now takes shape through my daily rhythms — it’s something I live, return to, & carry with me throughout the ordinary & sacred moments of my day.
